2008 was GREAT!!

This past weekend was some of the nicest weather that we've had in a while. It was beautiful sunny skies and mid 70's. Friday afternoon I got in an ez ride with a quick run afterwards. About 1:45 total. Just felt great to be outside. Saturday morning I was out semi-early for the Lodge group ride. It was a good ride - somewhat fast especially considering that I'm a little out of riding shape. Ended up with 2:30 total and some sore legs. Saturday night we headed over to Loly and Eric's for some fried turkey. Good stuff. It ended up being an early night and I was up early on Sunday for the Sea Turtle group run. Just did the short loop (7mile) and i'm even feeling that in the legs now. Later on Sunday, me and Steph did a nice spin down through Atlantic Beach. Totally mellow except for dodging the drunks on First street. Definitely a great weekend. As I was leaving the gym this morning, I started thinking about this whole year and everything that took place. It really was an awesome year. I can remember back to last December when Steph and I were flying back from our mini-vacation in New York, and I was filling out my race schedule to send to Shawn Burke and it was then that I decided that I wanted to focus on Xterra racing. It seemed like it would be just way more fun than the standard mountain bike racing that I had been so used to.
So with that focus in mind, I set about training as I had never done before - totally structured and with coaching. I had a bunch of really good races and some not-so-good races. And, somehow, the not-so-good races were the really important ones!! Funny how that worked out. But more importantly - I had a lot of fun. Steph always rags on me and says that I'm too serious - and maybe she's right, but I really enjoyed being serious about racing and training for once. It was WAY more fun to show up fit and prepared rather than just "showin up and blowin up" - which is how I usually raced. A couple of top 5 overalls and even some age-group wins were the fruits of my labor - stoked, especially considering that I used to just try to get the fastest bike split and then just survive / finish the run. So all in all, racing wise - 2008 was a success.
Now, as for personal life stuff - I married the girl of my dreams on September 6th. That day trumped all races for sure. It was truly a spectacular day - it all came together after many obstacles and a TON of planning (98.5% of that planning was Steph). We even managed to dodge a hurricane (Hanna) that was supposed to hit Jacksonville Beach on the same day as the wedding. I am definitely a lucky man to have such an beautiful and inspiring wife. She is without a doubt the best thing that has ever happened to me. I also became an Uncle-in-Law - Steph's sister Katie gave birth to Peyton in October. (Cute kid, cries a little much, but we'll work on that). And one of my best buds - Tony, had his second baby - Colin around the same time. And on the job front, I recently got a little promotion. So some more responsibility and some new challenges for 2009.

I'm really looking forward to the upcoming year - I know its gonna be a lot of hard work and won't always be fun - but as a manager of mine once told me, "Nothing bad ever comes out of working hard". Definitely a good thing to keep in mind when things are tough and you lose sight of the big picture. I'm working on finalizing my 2009 racing schedule - which won't be all that extensive - a couple of local races with maybe one or two out-of-towners. I'm gonna be working to try to start in the MBA program at UNF in either the summer or the fall, so besides working and training, I'll also be studying for that.

December Prep Work

Right now I'm trying to put in some easy workouts wherever and whenever possible. Just trying to kind of work back in to a routine, so that when January rolls around I can hit the ground running and start back with some structure.
Last week after being sick on Monday and Tuesday, I got motivated and hit the pool twice - on Wednesday morning and then Friday morning. I knew it was gonna feel hard and sure enough. On Wednesday, all I did was a steady 30 min swim (no lap count or anything) with an ez WU and then pulls for CD. For Friday -5x500 (2500 yds) - avg'd around 1:35 per 100. Not fast but I was really working on trying to get my stroke to feel smooth. I really felt like I had been swimming really good towards the latter part of the summer, so I'm hoping that by getting back in the pool a little earlier this year - I won't lose too much of that "muscle memory" technique. Its amazing that as I swam more I realized how important it is to be efficient. I was pulling consistent sub 1:20 / 100 pace (while wearing baggies) back in June - August. In an Xterra race, its nice to come out of the water in good position so that you don't have to pass a lot of people in the singletrack. A wide open trail is a fast trail! As for running, I got in about 13 miles total - 4 miles on Tuesday; 3.5 on Wednesday; and 5.5 on Friday. As for the weekend - I didn't do JACK!!! No riding, running, or swimming.....just mainly worked around the house and hung out with the Stephanator. Had plans to run on Sunday, but opted to stay out of the cold and sleep in and then drink a ton of coffee. Oh well, it was nice and relaxing and one of my home improvement projects is nearing completion.

As for this week - last nite i put in 6 miles at about 8 min pace - just a nice jog down 1st street. Nothing hard. And this morning (Wednesday), back in the pool for another 2500. I "felt" a little faster but my watch said otherwise. But that's alright, definitely not stressing on times or pacing right now.

I'm considering scaling back my plans for the marathon in February - might just do the half - but try to do it sub-1:30. My thought process is that since I'm not doing anything long distance, a marathon might not be the best idea. Besides, I'll need to start puttin in some longer bike miles in January and February and marathon training could get in the way. Time for recovery is definitely a rare commodity around my house. I've got to think about goals and priorities. It would be nice to do the marathon, but I think my tri stuff might suffer. Oh well, really not that big of a deal - but just something I've been kicking around. Right now, nothing is set in stone.

Next race - Gator Bowl 5K on New Year's Eve -- i'm really wanting to set a 5K PR here. Last year, I went 0:20:43, so there is some room for improvement.

Outback Half RR

All in all, it was a fun race. I loved the course - it was out in Mandarin and covered a lot of the roads that we ride on. It was a little cold at the start but I was hot and sweaty within the first mile. I really felt comfortable for the majority of the race - I settled in to my pace and just tried to keep my splits within a couple of secs. My goal pace was 7:40/ mile but I ended up going a tad faster without any problem. Going into this race, I had not done any runs over an hour. I knew I was stretching it a little bit and would probably be hurting for the last 5K -- sure enough. I had brought a couple of powergels with me - and took one at about 50 minutes and took the second one around 1:15 -- they definitely helped. So as my goal time was 1:40:00, I got it by almost 5 minutes. Pretty stoked on that -- I think that going sub 1:30 is definitely within reach for me, so that'll be my future goal for that distance.

BUT, for now I have to get the soreness out of the legs and get back to puttin in the miles. Hopefully, I'll feel good enough to hit the trails for some off-road running soon.

Run ...... eat.......work around the house.....repeat step 3 over and over and over

So, kind of on a whim - I've decided to run the Outback Half tomorrow. I figured since I decided to make running a focus this fall - i'd kick start it with a 13.1 - I've done the distance before - just never in a race setting. So I'm kinda going to use this as a guage for my fall / winter training.

No goals other than to run steady and finish. Wherever my pace is at mile 5 - i'm gonna try to hold it from there out.

Should be a fun experience. I always enjoy running races - its a cool atmosphere and just like ALL kinds of races - crossing the finish line is the best feeling in the world............

After that we're heading over to my folks' for some Thanksgiving Day festivities - I should be nice and hungry by then!! Looking forward to seeing my niece and nephew too.

After that, it's back to working around the house....kinda feels like this................

Sometimes ya gotta do whatcha gotta do.......

So true. These past couple of weeks, i've been taking care of some things that had gone neglected over the past many months - mainly the by-product of me riding, training, and racing so much this year. All year I kept telling Steph, "I'll do _______ AFTER Tahoe", so know its time to catch up. And I'm not the fastest handy-man, so these little projects are gonna take me a long time, but I gotta do what i gotta do. No point in putting things off anymore.

This way i figure it, when January rolls around, my "work orders" will be done and I'll be ready to hit it again. Oh well, such is the life of the "weekend warrior".

As for the mtb race in Felasco --> scrapped.

But, it's time to run. I want to just run. Especially, since my mtb is still jakked. I figure I can still fit some running in. Time-wise its perfect. Most of my runs are 30 - 90 minutes max, so its not like I'll be out riding for three to four hours. And, I can run in the dark - i figure its much safer than riding at night.

But, yeah, my rear shock has been sent back for warranty. I'm hoping the Warranty-God will smile down on me and get that thing back soon. I want to get the Spark fixed up and ready for the 09 Xterra season. It's in pretty rough shape now, but since i'll be taking some time off - i figure it'll be a perfect time to have a little "MTB ANNUAL OUTAGE".

So, the plan for my weekend is to finish rebuilding the gable on the front of the house. Run some. Chill with the wifey and then drink some beers.

(Oh yeah, and i'll probably waste a bunch of time on that damn Facebook........man, I'm addicted to that crap. )

Been a good week (so far).....

Looking forward to the weekend, that's for sure. This week has kind of flown by - which is a good thing. Definitely better than when it drags on and on.

So far, I've gotten my rides in everyday including the super fun "Urban Assault" ride on Wednesday night. There's a couple of guys that ride old-skool fully-rigid mountain bikes with slicks and road cassettes through some backroads and I did the ride with them on my mtb - with knobbies. It was about 30miles total and I had a blast. We rode through the cemetary and then back along the intracoastal on some roads that were SUPER DARK. It was cool, i'm definitely gonna try to incorporate this ride into my wintertime training. I've gotta get some slicks soon.

Tomorrow, I'm gonna do about 3 hrs or so on the road - with a handful of 10min efforts thrown in to the middle. Sunday, I've got a 7miler with the SeaTurtle running group then maybe a lil Hanna Park mtb ride in the afternoon.

Should be a fun weekend with some great weather!!! This time of the year, the temperatures ROCK!!
